Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Our brief for the preliminary task was all about continuity. This involved “filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue”. The task had to demonstrate exhibit match on action, 180-degree rule and shot/reverse shot. These were all the basic requirements for our task it only included two characters also.

Match on action was used in the preliminary exercise on scenes where the character was walking in and out of the rooms. We used the same in our new media product when Martin falls over and when Roxanne accidentally drops the drugs out of her bag because we couldn't change it easily without the knowledge or time to practice. The preliminary task helped us make our match on action shots more clean cut, precise and professional. However our match on action is not always accurate due to the timing of the film as we had to film in between days to satisfy every schedule within our group.

The shot reverse shot was used to show the conversation and reaction of each character. In the new media product (Jackpot) we have down we used high angle shots when Roxanne was first introduced to Martin when he falls over and she looks down at him because it would represent her power and the representation she carried. We didn't use high angled shots in our preliminary exercise as we didn't have the experience or how to do it but now we know how to use it, we used it for affect of representation of power.

We used continuity within Jackpot because all of the props, setting, costumes Etc so the person who played Marin had to bring the same costume every time the same for Roxanne this didn't change because; it would affect the believably of the media product and the social realism. When we first filmed the 2 minute film, we didn't think it looked very good so we did it again to get all the shots right because the continuity was very off. The problem was that we needed to re-shoot everything due to mise-en-scene continuity. We didn't have this problem in our preliminary exercise because it only took us one session to do it right. I have learnt that if a scene is wrong in the film industry that the production company would match up the continuity as it will cost them more to re-shoot everything and waste time and energy which wouldn't be good for the actors/actresses either.

Question 4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

What was the target audience for your film and why?
For our film we wanted to aim it at a unisex audience ages around 15-30 year olds. The age rating is around 15 because we wanted our target audience to relate to the characters such as Roxanne who is quite young and so is the other female character. Basically we wanted our audience to have a good understanding of our characters and what they represent. Additionally we felt that this was appropriate due to frequent drug references and the bad language used such as swear words throughout the film.

What age rating did you decide to give your film and why?
After finding and writing up our story line we decided to give our film an age rating of 15 we decided this because after looking at BBFC we got a better understanding of age ratings and what they should contain within the film. We found that an age 15 film should contain sexual references, drugs and strong language. However we included two but didn't have time to include sexual references due to it being only a two minute film if we carried on we would have definitely included this into the film.

What research did you conduct with your target audience?
Well before doing the film we looked at crime dramas and what they often included such as iconography and characterisation. We conducted an online survey to prove this and to see what our target audience would like to see within a crime based film. By doing this we got a clear understanding of what our target audience would like to see and what would be the best things to include within our film 'Jackpot'.

How did you use this research for your film?
When we got our research back from the random sample we got it from we got lots of feedback that will be good in indicating a target audience for our film. For example when we got our surveys back we found that more people wanted to know a bit of a back story about our protagonist Roxanne as they wanted a character they could relate to and understand better. I think we achieved this by the use of camera angles and the scene where she surprisingly takes out the drugs of her bag. The use of the gunshot sound effect makes the audience sympathise with her and to some extent feel sorry for her being burdened with this. Then the use of Martin Crowe the villain in the story line and the use of his broken speech supports the impression of his shady secretive personality. We chose to do this purposely and make his dialogue seem suspicious and not very well pronounced as he's thinking of what to say all the name thus displaying nervousness.

Preliminary Exercise

Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Stereotypes and Ideology within a film are very important mainly because the audience can then relate to a character or at least know a little bit about them just by looking at them.

Social groups:

Sexuality

Regional identity

Gender

Socio-Economic class

Age

Disability/ability

 Race/Ethnicity

Sexuality within our film isn’t really an immediate issue and isn’t mentioned or hinted anywhere.

Regional identity is recognized in Jackpot mainly because of the accents used and ‘Barnsley’ is mentioned within the script. Urban areas such as a park where we filmed are associated with teenagers and crime is sought to happen there a lot. To represent the North of England and mainly south Yorkshire in a positive light we would have included no drugs, good education and clean areas. However we do not show our area in a positive light but rather in a negative light and instead involve drugs and crime into our narrative.

Gender in our narrative is a key subject because we have a male role and two female roles. In our film we see women in a positive light acting innocent and as a victim of the male. On the other hand we see the male as a villain planting the drugs in the females bag. This doesn’t challenge the stereotype of gender as most crime dramas have the male as a villain and a woman as the victim. To add to gender roles we have a female friend of the main character who also is a woman this is typical because most friends are usually of the same sex.

Socio-Economic class is included in our narrative due to Daniel being a drug dealer in the film disguised as a lawyer. This could suggest he has a lot of money and is of higher class than Olivia who is a college student. He is also dressed in a suit making him look like he is a businessman. The friend of Olivia is portrayed just as a typical teenager and is from the same class as Olivia.

Age is a big factor within our film; Daniel is playing a male 30+ year old who appears to be mature as he is a lawyer what you’d expect from him. Two teenage girls are also used in our film hence the reason why their so naive towards the drugs when there found. Age defines most of our script. In the film Daniel because he is older talks very proper and formative while the two girls talk very broad and use a lot of slang this could be associated with their ages.

Disability and ability is not an issue in our film and isn’t part of our script but it may be included later on in our film if we had carried on.

Race and ethnicity wasn’t really explored in our film either all the characters are white British but this wasn’t done for any purpose it just happened that we were all from the same ethnic group.

15 minute analysis into the wolf of wall street.

I chose the wolf of wall street as my 15 minute analysis because it includes drugs, sex and violence which is very similar to what our film is based on. Another reason as to why i chose it is because its just been released into cinemas so will give me and my group ideas on how films make these type of themes modern and still exciting as they have been done a 1000 times before so this should give us a different take on it.

The Beginning;
Well first off the film starts with the mainstream label being animated into 'paramount' with shooting stars around it suggesting it is a mainstream big starring film from the outset. Then  it goes on to show other labels that have accompanied the making of the film. After that we see a street sign saying 'wall street' which goes very well with the obvious title, it starts off as a documentary kind of start with an voice over and use of film from the past mixed with pictures from New York and wall street itself, including people in offices and pictures of famous statues flickering from one to the other. All of a sudden editing skills come into play with a lion walking through an office around lots of people and we realize the voice over is actually for a commercial which gives the viewer an urge to carry on watching.
I like how they used editing effects for when Leonardo DiCaprio the main character throws the midgit onto the bulls eye board. I think its very good how they've used props and costume to portray a office of men all dressed similar and when Leonardo DiCaprio throws the money everywhere giving us interest to how he got the money (25 grand). Then we go into another voice over scene of the main character introducing himself in still pictures of his life starting from how he was raised. This could work well for our film considering it is going to tell a story of someones life and why they have so much power, hence the office and he looks like hes in charge from the way hes speaking. To add to this LD uses swear words in the first line he says suggesting that the film is not suitable for young children.
Next the drugs and sex enters the film with him having some kind of substance off someone in a sexual way, suggesting hes bad and he knows it as he is really honest about it 'i love drugs' is one of the lines he says.
The character looks as if to be on a one way street to hell as he is in a helicopter now driving it recklessly because hes that intoxicated. He plays the part very well. We have only been introduced to him and his wife Naomi so far. His house is astonishing with a grand wooden staircase it looks very posh so this suggests to the viewers that he has lots of money and can afford anything he wants.
Soon after hes walking through his house speaking freely about all the drugs he does like hes proud this is shot in a mid shot so we only see from the waist up. The scene must have been shot on a track as the camera is following him through his house to outside. He drinks half of his orange juice then throws it in his garden and you hear a loud noise of smashing glass for effect, that he doesn't care about anything.
We then see a wide shot of him arriving at his office from his home in a limo. The lighting is bright and he always seems to be in daylight suggesting everything's going his way.
We get introduced to Mark Hanna who lays his hands on LD on his shoulders suggesting hes higher on the food chain than him, hes dressed very smartly and introduces himself to Jordan (LD). Suddenly the scene bursts into action still with Jordans voice over saying hes hooked on the adrenaline of the wall street market, there's alot of swearing involved too in this scene showing the aggressiveness of the film. Then Mark Hanna starts doing drugs at the dinner table where him and Jordan have lunch in what looks like a high end restaurant, the way Mark Hanna talks to the waiter suggests hes been in the wall street game a long time and is well known. We also realise that the film has gone back in time to when Jordan first starts out in his job because he says no to Mark Hanna offering him drugs or even a martini. Mark Hanna gives the impression that he has a very bad addiction with his sudden movements and how he talks about his job.
I like how after the serious dialogue they start doing a kind of indian beat on his chest (Mark Hanna) and its turns into comedic scene as he gets Jordan to join in who obviously finds this very weird but i like how it swiftly turned to a funny sense into it, this gives me good ideas for my film.
After that the scene changes into a strip club which is very sex related and again the voice over is back it shows jordan took Mark Hannas advice and is drinking martinis too. At the end of the 15 minutes we see him walking down a hallway in an important building then the elevator doors close and we see a date 'October 1987' showing the viewer that the film is not set in modern day. This could be identified though by the choice of costume, hair and technology used e.g the phones and computers that we see in the offices. I will definitely be taking inspiration from how they linked text by editing into the film in the initial scenes. I would suggest this to establish where the film is being set and to create a certain mood like the wolf of wall street did.

Extra research into our genre.

When doing my initial research I've found that our genre can be spilt into many different sections.
So I've decided to do see what there is and if we can incorporate elements into our own work. Suspense is a crucial characteristic of the thriller genre. It gives the viewer a feeling of pleasurable fascination and excitement mixed with apprehension, uncertainty, anticipation, tension, and anxiety. These develop from unpredictable, mysterious and rousing events during the narrative, which make the viewer or reader think about the outcome of certain actions. It also gives the person the so-called "on-edge" feeling. Suspense builds in order to make those final moments, no matter how short, the most memorable. They are the defining features in a thriller.

Possible distributor of our film.

Possible distributors of our film
Because we are college students on a tight budget we decided that the best way to distribute our film
would be to go with an independent film company. Our film is a crime thriller so we wanted a relevant developer. After researching potential developers this is what I have come up with.

 1) Richwater Films.
Richwater films is a new independent company. The films they have developed are mainly crime thrillers staring Danny Dyer. Films such as- Vendetta, Assassin, Top Dog, Age of Kill and We still kill the old way. These films are all crime thrillers similar to ours they have alot of drugs and crime.  Richwater aims to produce and/or co-produce 6 to 8 movies each year across a range of budget levels.

2) Big Buddha Films
Big Buddha Films is an in independent film company in Sheffield that focuses on making films with a strong female voice, that tackle human dilemmas and show the vulnerabilities of human existence. This can relate to our film because our film has a female main character who is in a vulnerable situation.

3) Vertigo Films
Vertigo films is a London based film distribution company. They have produced films like football factory and the business. The business is very similar to our film because it is a crime thriller. With things like drugs and guns similar to ours.

Research into title sequences.

When doing my research into title sequences i wanted them to be very similar and re-ablate to the piece we are going to produce. Researching this will be good to give us lots of inspiration and ideas for our own crime thriller title sequence.
I chose three that i thought were the best and could relate well to our film:

Catch me if you can
I chose 'catch me if you can' which is a very original bold design for a opening sequence. I like how the music fastens and slows according to whats going on screen. Also it has no vocals in the background just music so you get to read who stars in it. I like also how they've made the big stars names bigger and bolder than the rest. To add to this at the beginning it shows what company produced the film. I think the use of suspicion in the title sequence would go well with our film as it has lots of tension and sneakiness in it.

Vertigo
Secondly i decided to chose 'vertigo' opening sequence because it gives out the sense that something bad is going to happen. I love how it uses the woman's face at the beginning to incorporate the main titles then the close up of the eye. Its very effective the way they use the red filter to symbolize blood maybe. I think this kind of thing could be used for ours definitely so the audience will be very interested. Furthermore the use of patterns after the woman is very clever as it makes it remember able so you don't forget it. Vertigo features a masterfully crafted and almost hypnotic title sequence. A perfect opening to the film.

Reservoir Dogs
Thirdly i chose reservoir dogs by Quentin Tarantino which is a brilliant film. Unlike other films it starts off by an opening scene of some characters round a dinner table accompanied by dialogue unique by far. This is probably the best title sequence I've seen its very cool and the use of voice overs and the way the camera fades out is all to its advantage. The way the characters are walking along the roadside in slow motion is slick and gets the audience into that mindset straight away. I like how it stops on every character at first and provides the name below their face i would definitely think about doing this in our film although can be portrayed as cheesy i think it can sometimes work in a crime thriller like Reservoir Dogs. The back in track is perfect as well because it goes with the men all dressed in classic black suits.

Research into a specific title sequence.

For my title sequence i chose Dexter from the tv series which is in the crime thriller genre. First of all from the onset we see the name 'dexter' wrote in big red letters then blood drip down on it implying crime and gore is yet to come. It stands out on the white background. Each shot is close up to the character in the beginning and i noticed that a lot of focus pulls are used to distort the image to make the audience think its something else. No other shots are used this is to probably intensify the opening sequence. It jumps from one scene/shot to another throughout.
Slow motion editing techniques are used the character cracks the egg into the pan same when the character cuts the orange in half juice spurts all over indicating a murder scene because that's what the blood would actually do. Every sound that the character does is intensified and can be heard clearly over the soundtrack that's being played however their is no vocals in the song just a tune. Each shot is very close up so the viewer gets to see every little detail hinting that the character is very specific and likes to do things a certain way his 'killings' for example. An very good example of this would be at the beginning when it goes in on the hair on his arms when he slaps that fly dead then again suggesting a crime and that the character has no conscious. I think this is a very good example for us because its very memorable and gets the viewers intrigued in every way. I think it could even be linked to psychological thrillers because the way he cuts the bacon would make you think he was cutting up a dead body when as a matter of fact hes just having his morning breakfast and getting ready. We finally see the characters face at the end when he puts his top on in a mid shot. This is very tactical as it makes the audience think this character is very suspicious and they want to know more.

Genre of our film.

The genre of our film is a crime thriller and is meant to keep the viewer on the edge of their seats. Thriller is a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as its main elements. Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods, giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertaintysurpriseanxiety and/or terror. Films of this genre tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced

Common methods and themes in crime thrillers are mainly ransomscaptivitiesheistsrevengekidnappings. More common in mystery thrillers are investigations and the whodunit technique. Common elements in psychological thrillers are mind gamespsychological themesstalking, confinement/deathtrapshorror-of-personality, and obsession. Elements such as fringe theoriesfalse accusations and paranoia are common in paranoid thrillers.
By doing some research ive found that most crime and thriller films overlap such as the godfather or Heat. This is where they combine the use of crime novels and insert violent scenes for example a gun fight or a chase.
This exactly what we want for our film to keep the audience excited and wanting to know whats next so this is what we categorized it in for our film 'Jackpot'.

Some good examples of these films would be:
1. Vertigo
2. 21 jump street
3. pulp fiction
4. James bond casino royale
5. Kill bill

Distributors of our film.

Research into possible distributors of our film
Our film is going to be done on a very tight budget so we are probably going to be financed by a independent film developer that is interested in crime dramas or coming of age films. So I've done some specific research into what our film would work well with.

Axiom films
Looks like a good independent film company that have worked with big stars such as Ryan Gosling in Half nelson. The company also screens in other countries so we could get a lot of publicity that way. Over the past decade, Axiom has steadily built a reputation for taking creative risks, working with new talent and original ideas; producing a diverse body of work from directors from all parts of the world. Uniquely, each film project that the company has been involved with has been both a critical and commercial success, frequently winning awards, sold for distribution in most key markets and, without exception, selected to screen at the major international film festivals (Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Toronto).

Metrodome film
This company could be a possible distributor of our film because it has produced films like Shifty, Pusher and fifty dead men walking. All these films link top the genre of our film because their action crime based thrillers. Plus they are london based making them regionally attractive to our audience so their style will compliment our film lots. They also have just produced a film called big bad wolves which looks like its set somewhere we'd want it to be set for our film.

Studio Canal
I found this film company which is a, look like they could produce and help distribute our film. I think this because by doing some research I've found out that they produced a film called Drug war which is perfect for us. This is because now we know that studio canal wont be afraid to push the boundaries and are comfortable to deal with drug issues and violence. STUDIOCANAL is a subsidiary of the CANAL+ Group. It is one of Europe’s leading companies in the market for co-production, acquisition, distribution and sale of international feature films. STUDIOCANAL is the only studio operating simultaneously in three main territories across Europe: France, the United Kingdom and Germany. The company distributes a total of more than 50 films a year throughout Europe. Additionally, STUDIOCANAL owns one of the most important libraries in the world, with more than 5,000 international titles. However studiocanal is owned by CANAL+ making it an owned company and their really well known in France so maybe this would not be an appropriate choice for our film.

Title Sequences

Writing on the titles
Writing on the titles can be done in block capitals normally on crime dramas/thrillers to give the idea that everything is top secret and dangerous.

Examples can include James Bond as they give the idea that everything is top secret and has to be kept safe.

This links to our film as in the film a man drops a bag of cocaine into a woman’s handbag and therefore we want the idea that everything is top secret and we want to give the idea to the audience that everything is dangerous.
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/skyfall/

Imagery on the Titles
Imagery on crime thrillers can include use of guns, drugs and cars.

Examples can include The Sweeney as they show a car going down a street and a man loading a gun.

This links to our film as the film include all of these iconographies and therefore we want to give the idea to the audience that nothing is safe and danger can lurk around the corner.

Colour on the Titles

Colours on the titles can include something like a harsh orange or blue to reflect the idea that danger is lurking around the corner and also to represent the police.

Examples can include 21 Jump Street and the James Bond movies such as Skyfall and Goldfinger as they give the idea that the world is not as nice as people think it is.

This links to the film as a man puts a bag of cocaine in a woman’s handbag and frames her for a drug deal. Because we want the audience to understand on what the genre is, we may go for harsh colours to give a sense of foreboding and clue to give the idea on what the film may be about.

Certification of our film

After considering many certifications, including 12's/ 12A's, we have decided that our movie should be rated at 15. This is down to numerous reasons:
http://www.slideshare.net/danfoth21/reasons-on-certification
